| | "Burnt Offerings"--Christian Death | ] | I haven't posted anything on here in almost a year. It's not that I still don't frequent the site, it's just sheer inexcusable laziness. I'm posting now because I always have something to say about this being my favorite time of year. Yes, Halloween(aka the only holiday that really matters to Kenny Dugan) is upon us. All Hallow's Eve falls on a Saturday and I have taken Sunday off from work to give myself a nice Holiday Weekend.
My good friends(that's a fucking understatement) Adam and Maria are throwing a Halloween party at their beautiful apartment in Jersey City on Halloween night. Carrie and I are going out there to spend the night. There shall be horror movies, junk food, and booze galore.....what's not to love about that???
Aside from festivities, this time of year always puts me in a good mood. The air is nice and crisp. I love the fiery beauty of the leaves as they die and fall off the trees. Cable networks like AMC and IFC begin to play horror films non-stop. I also love the fact that Halloween is a holiday in which you do what you want. You don't HAVE to dress up in costume(I prefer not to but love that others do). You don't HAVE to commute across state lines to see family. You don't HAVE to but must of us do....gorge ourselves. We overindulge in fun(i.e. horror film marathons, junk food, and booze galore). We have a real blast before the bullshit holidays start rolling in with their agitating bright lights, shitty television specials, overcrowded stores, and sanctimonious religious trappings.
So, I hope you all make good of this coming weekend.....and have a fun and Happy Halloween/Samhain

| President Obama.... |
[Jan. 22nd, 2009|10:29 am] |
I want to make a few comments on the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. This past Tuesday was both a momentous and fantastic day for our country. Social barriers have been smashed as has the rigid ideology that has paralyzed our nation for too long. Reason and logic will finally have a seat at the table. We have a leader of the free world who actually is a "big reader." A man who has appointed individuals to his Cabinet that don't agree w/ him on every single issue and will not be afraid to tell him so (hello...HILLARY CLINTON).
President Obama has an enormous task ahead of him. He must repair the shattered financial industry of the United States. He is inheriting two wars which have been grossly mishandled for far too long (one of them was completely unnecessary). It is his duty to repair the once near pristine image of America before a world which now mistrusts, and in some cases, despises us for our heavy handedness and arrogance, courtesy of the Bush/Cheney lot. I am not saying that I believe he can accomplish all, if any, of these things. But, I certainly believe he is our best shot which is why I proudly cast my vote for him in both the Democratic primary and the general election.
President Obama is a man who has, thus far, been identified with his ability to give a good speech , or as his adversaries label it, "rhetoric." The speech he gave at the Capitol, upon being sworn in, was damn good, but lacked the crafty oratory of his previous ones. This is a good thing. I loved it for how frank it was. Instead of simply blinding us with shiny optimism, he directly addressed the dire circumstances that we are faced with and aknowledged that tough times are indeed ahead. Another key component of the speech was how he noted that America is a nation of "Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and NON-BELIEVERS." So, that means that us athiests are in fact AMERICANS AFTER ALL!!! When has a president ever even aknowledged us before??? This is a sure sign that we have a president who will RESPECT the separation of church and state......GLORY BE!!!!
As for FORMER President George W. Bush and FORMER Vice President Dick Cheney, it is my sincere hope that you both fade into obscurity and never have any influence over the direction of our country again. I think it is probably too much for me to ask that you both contemplate what you have done or feel a sense of remorse because I suppose to do that one would first have to be in possession of a conscience or an ounce of shame.
America took a big step in electing Barack Obama. Not just the fact that he's black, but because we rejected the politics of fear and smear. We didn't care about Rev. Wright, the flag lapel, or past drug use. We wanted an intelligent and reflective individual who will pull us out of the filth that the pigs in the previous administration left us to wallow in. |

| | "Come Back to Me"--Razed in Black | ] | Things have been "so-so". My job still hangs in the basis and we fear everday could be the last. Retail sales for the holiday season were about the worst they've ever been do to our shattered economy, and the book selling business was by no means immune. So, that's been a constant source of stress for me.
On the flip side, I started sort of "seeing" this girl at work. She's a really cute blonde chick who is very into music. She's my age and seems to share alot of my own personal fears. We hung out last night and I had a great time. She is coming off of a very long term relationship so she's kind of nervous about this kind of shit. As for me, I don't really believe in relationships, maybe because I know that I am such a difficult person to deal with. So, I think we're gonna keep things as is...be special "friends" and just have a good time like we've been doing this past week. Unfortunately, she's off to Flordida this weekend to settle some family drama. I told her she's brave and that I admire her for doing something like that because I know it is out of the realm of possibility for a dude like myself who loathes confrontation. So, I won't get to see her again or hang for at least another week.
That's all for now. Peace out. |

| | "Giving Ground"--Sisters of Mercy | ] | So, I've been on vacation and will be until Monday. Over the past 2 weeks I've managed to make it to 2, count 'em TWO, shows. I finally saw the Sisters of Mercy @ Irving Plaza w/ some friends after work on a Monday night and they were INCREDIBLE. Monday is usually my craziest, most hectic day so it's no small miracle I didn't fall asleep on my feet no matter how good the band was. This past Friday I saw Soulfly w/a friend at a place called Blender Theatre. The venue used to literally be a movie theatre, so the sound system was less than up to par and effected the bands performance throughout. Then we headed back to the bar for a less than great evening. I ended up losing my cellphone in a drunken blackout and had to swipe the credit card the next day to get a new one (this hurt). I still have the same number but lost EVERYBODY'S NUMBER.
The weekend was off to a craptastic start but ended up not half bad, as I spent all of Sunday w/ some friends @ their apt. in Jersey City...sipping Jack Daniels, eating pizza, and watching horror movies.
As always, I realize that I am drinking too much and consuming too many substances because my body feels like it is constantly radiating pain. I'm convinced my constant heartburn is acid-reflex disease brought on by copious consumption of alcoholic beverages. But what am I gonna do besides say I know I have a problem here on good 'ol LJ???
For the rest of the week, nothing concrete planned. Might stop down in the Slope on thurs. to visit Mike and Ryan in their respective bartending gigs (disregard previous paragraph). Also, Vinnie Paul (Pantera) is doing a signing w/ the Borders up @ Penn Plaza, so I'll probably contact my boss and see if it's cool if I hang out around the scene up there.
I wanted to get some actual writing done on my week off...but I am a coward so this blog will have to count for that......I keep going over to try and visit Billy but he's never home( the coward in me is also relieved about that)
Some friends very close to me are having some problems and it's effecting me....they're two very important people to me and I just want things to be cool....but everytime a step is taking forward...one is taken back
Guess I should mention how HAPPY I am not only that Barack Obama was elected 44th President of the United States, but also that he was elected in a virtual landslide. The man has a very tough job ahead and I certainly don't envy him.
That's about all for now......be good to yourselves and the world around you....even though it is often filled w/ shit ---KennyDoogs |

| | "Movement of Fear"--Tweaker | ] | Greetings. The economy is in the shitter, all our jobs seem to hang in the balance, the Mets have been eliminated, Paul Newman is dead, and I'm still a raging alcoholic. Ain't life just grand???
Last night when I got home, I laid in front of the t.v. and saw that the Coen Bros. film, "Miller's Creek" was on IFC. I'm a fairly big Coen Bros. fan, but somehow this one has eluded me for years. I caught the movie about ten minutes into it. I must say that it was quite fucking brilliant. The Bros. have this way of directing scenes of intense violence, blending them w/ the ridiculous, somehow making them still seem believable...that can only be described as COOL(for lack of any better word). A couple weeks ago I picked up their highly under-rated first film, "Bloodsimple", which has finally been re-released on dvd.....I heavily recommend that one too.
Three weeks into it, and I am still digging the new Metallica album, "Death Magnetic." I really expected nothing of this effort, having given up hope on Metallica over a decade ago. But this one is the real thing. Think "Justice." If your a fan of metal, particularly thrash, abandon your preconceived notions and pick this one up!!
I'm currently reading "American Pastoral." This is my first time attempting a Phillip Roth novel. It's structure is very complex and the narration almost loses itself in places, but overall it's quite good. Towards the end you come to realize that what it's really about is...well.....America. Before that I read Denis Johnson's BRILLIANT opus, "Tree of Smoke." One might think that the world does not need any more fictionalized accounts about America's tragic experience w/ Vietnam.....one will be proven wrong by reading this one.
As I write this the weekend is upon us. Last weekend brought karoake silliness in Lower Manhattan. What shall this one bring??? |

At this point in time, I don't know what I have less faith in.....the economic well being and potential survival of the United States of America or the fading playoff hopes of the New York Mets. Both issues are stressing me out and keeping me up at night...........THERE WAS A TIME THAT THE PIECES FIT, BUT I'VE WATCHED THEM FALL APART...MILDEWED AND SMOLDERING. |

I just found out about an hour ago that I'm also going to the Biohazard concert at the new L'amour's on Staten Island courtesy of Billy K. He called me a little while ago and asked if I wanted his extra ticket. I figured that I might as well seeing as this is probably the band's final tour (I know all bands say that). Billy is driving out to Staten Island. Mikey G. and Shugs are coming along as well. The only catch is we have to catch R.T.'s band's first performance at some bar first...I think around 6 o'clock. Well, the other catch is I have work the next day.....and I'm pretty sure I'll be getting home in the wee hours of the morning since L'amour's never sees the need to have the headlining band go on before 1 a.m. Should be an event-filled and tiring weekend. Maybe I'll tell you about it if I survive. |

Yet I'm still me. I'm still feeling depressed and filled w/ anxiety. It's been ages since I've had a full on anxiety attack, but I was damn close to one coming home from work on the subway the other night. I'm consumed by thoughts of darkness.....On the weekends I drink like a fish and do substances which should have put me in the ground by now...all w/out a care..I mean this in all honesty/w out A FUCKING CARE.....I have so much inner rage built up inside me and utter contempt for the world in general. | | "Hollow Hills"--Bauhaus | ] | I'm currently reading Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel, "Last Exit to Brooklyn." Selby, as many of you may know wrote the novel, "Requiem for a Dream", which was much later adapted into one of my all time favorite films under the brilliant directing of Darren Aranovsky. Last Exit, though I am only about three quarters of the way through, is quite possibly one of the most fucked up things I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I tend to gravitate toward authors who have the talent for painting hellish visions and I must say that Selby was a master at this craft. |

| | "Crimson and Clover"--Joan Jett and the Blackhearts | ] | I just finished Stephen King's brand new novel, "Duma Key." I know I wrote on here last year that the completion of the Dark Tower series would be "it" for me and King's fiction, having believed he wrapped it up and said everything he had to say. But I got a FREE ADVANCED copy of "Duma Key" from work and it was too much to resist. Let me say that this is a damn fine book. It is one of King's most disciplined and expertly structured works since "Pet Semetary"(1983). King focuses on character development and reveals only hints at the menace lurking below his ill-fated cast. The final quarter of the novel morphs into a full-on Lovecraftian terror tale of near-epic proportions. I highly recommend "Duma Key", particularly to those of you who may be weary of Stephen King.
I have off for most of next week. It turns out that I have 4 vacation days that I need to use up by the end of January or I lose them. I took Sun-Wed. off....Thurs...is my normal workday....so all I have is Friday next week. Not too shabby, right??? Unfortunately, two of those days will be spent at the dentist. I have to have my lower wisdom tooth in the back left side removed because it is cracked and is becoming infected. That hella-sucks, but the surgeon who does it is knowns for being, shall I say "liberal" w/ the Vicodin prescriptions!! (woo-hoo). I had to go to the dentist last week for a filling. That wasn't too bad, but other than the novocaine there were no drugs involved. I'm making up for all the time that I haven't had dental insurance.

the Cure have FINALLY rescheduled last fall's MSG show for June 30th!!!

| | "Public Enemy"--Genitorturers | ] | The 2008 Election Season(so far)... I'm happy to say that this has been the most exciting election season in my lifetime. Unlike four years ago, the nominee(or this time NOMINEES) have not been handpicked by the first 2 states that voted. The election appears to be wide open on both sides of the political spectrum. What this means is that Super Tuesday, the day New York votes,....ACTUALLY COUNTS FOR SOMETHING!!!
As for the candidates themselves, I am content w/ the two Democratic nominees, Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton(I don't see Edwards as viable any longer...but I like his stances too). I will vote for whomever wins my party's nomination. That being said...at this point in time I am 95% certain that the candidate I will be voting for in the New York Democratic Primary will be...Barack Obama.
I believe that Barack Obama is simply more electable than Sen. Clinton. Obama's crushing win in Iowa and strong second place finish in New Hampshire should be sufficient evidence that he can draw votes. He is a fresh face who does not carry the baggage of Hillary Clinton nor does he summon the insane virtriol of the right-wing. He is the FIRST SERIOUS black candidate for the United States Presidencey and he is NOT RUNNING ON RACE. Instead, Senator Obama has been sticking to the "bread and butter" issues that effect us "ordinary"(always hate this term..but my vocabulary is limited due to many dead brain cells) Americans; the economy, diplomatic relations, and national security. Yes, I wish he would be more SPECIFIC about these topics...but I think that comes w/ time as we get into the real battle in the Fall.
Obama has the gift of communication which in the world of politics is well.....everything. His speeches have been some of the best I've seen in the last 20 years or so. When he won Iowa and got up on the stage he looked like a Kennedy(Jack and Bobby...NOT Ted). So, I look forward to casting my vote for him on Feb. 2. I hope you all do too.
As for the Republican side, with the exception of John McCain....ALL DISASTERS who will not do a damn thing to repair the damage that 8 years of Bush/Cheney have done to America. I was glad McCain won New Hampshire. I think a race between him and Obama or Clinton would be a good thing for the country. I respect McCain highly but I won't vote for him because he won't do anything to make health care more available and affordable to us. I also disagree w/ him on Iraq. I don't care if things have calmed down there a bit now....we need to find a way to get our troops out of there. The invasion of Iraq was quite possibly the worst foreign policy blunder in U.S. history. We need to learn from our mistakes not plunge further into them. So I respect McCain, but my vote is on the Democratic side, which hopefully is Barack Obama. That's all.

| | "End of Flowers"--Diary of Dreams | ] | Wow, it is brutal outside. The sky is like a frozen lake that has cracked and the broken shards are raining cold death on us. So much for going into work today to pick up some overtime. Ah, that was a pipedream anway, who am I kidding? Besides, I've been going in 2 hours early everyday anyway. Not to mention that I have a week's work of laundry to take care of amongst other shyte.
I took New Year's Day off. I'm not working it again. I did it last year and it was a long, drawn out, pointless waste of my time. Now, to find something to do for New Year's Eve. I've made no plans. Maybe because I have no life? Could be. Anyone doing anything interesting???
I'm currently reading Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead." It's one of those books that I've "always been meaning to read"(much like Capote's "In Cold Blood" which I just finished last week and I must say was quite excellent)...thus far it's damn good. It's actually kind of remarkable that he was able to undertake such a complex, layered, character-driven work at such an age(it was published in 1948 and he was in his late 20's). Pat lent me his Chuck Klosterman collection and I'm tearing through those(I had read and gave him "Fargo Rock City").
I just read that Devildriver is doing a headlining tour starting in February w/ Napalm Death as main support.....ABOUT FUCKING TIME these guys got the top of the bill. So, that should be the next show on the agenda. I think that's it for now.
Hope all is well in your fucking worlds. Drop Kennydoogs a line sometime(both kinds of lines...tee-hee) as I am lately in the mood for human interaction. Later. |

The winds have to be around 40 miles an hour!! Ironically, the song that was playing on my ipod as I trudged through the park was Pantera's "Floods."
I'm off today. I have work tomorrow and then I'm on vacation for the next week. Of course, I don't have the $$$ to actually go anywhere or have a real vacation. So, what is Kenny to do??? I could make use of the time to get things in order. Maybe rejoin the gym or dare I say....resume writing(can you say, "pipe dream"). Anyways, I'm sort of hoping my old school friends will keep w/ our Thanksgiving Eve tradition and all hang out at Smitty's.
On another note, I just got Ministry tix online through the pre-sale. This is Ministry's farewell tour so the tix were on the expensive side. They're doing two dates at Irving Plaza in May. I got for the first show on May 1st. Ministry always kills live so this should be wicked decent. Lamb of God/Devildriver at Hammerstein is a mere 2 weeks away so I'm uber-excited about that.

| | "Bela Legosi is Dead"--Bauhaus | ] | A very happy and healthy Samhain to one and all. This is by far my favorite holiday and my favorite time of year. The weather is comfortable; we are finally free of summer's oppressive humidity and the punishing cold and smothering frost of winter are yet to punish us. The dying leaves look like flames as they fall from the trees and begin to wither. Most important of all. This is the only holiday where we don't have to DEAL WITH BULLSHIT. No travelling, no worries about gift exchanges. On this day the only rituals are consuming junk food...and endless HORROR FILMS ON CABLE!!!!
All that being said, how am I celebrating Samhain/Halloween(I refuse to use "Eve of All Saints"..that nauseating Catholic title!!)??? I've been reading Nikki Sixx's "Heroin Diaries." It's some powerful and scary shit. Where Motley's biography, "The Dirt", was a celebration of the debauchery, this is shows the darker(and probably more realistic) side of things. Also, it hits home on certain levels.
I haven't been going out at all, accept for the MachineHead/ArchEnemy show a few weeks back. But I've still been taking things to the limit. Speaking of shows......LAMB OF GOD,KILLSWITCH, AND DEVILDRIVER @ HAMMERSTEIN IN NOVEMBER!!!!! This one is a MUST!!!!!
